Do you suffer from tendonitis or bursitis?

Tendonitis and bursitis may develop gradually when caused by repetitive movements that produce inflammation. They may also be caused by an accident.

Possible Causes

The body’s long muscles have cord-like structures at their ends, tendons, which allow the muscles to pull on a part of the body to make it move. For example, there are several tendons in the shoulder that make the arm move. Excessive repetition of movements causes friction and creates inflammation in the tendon, resulting in tendonitis. Tendonitis can also be caused by a sudden, forceful movement.

Bursae are small pads that limit the amount of friction between different structures. They are found in almost all joints, including the shoulders, elbows, hips, knees and ankles. Inflammation of a bursa, or bursitis, is caused by repetitive movements or by a direct blow to the bursa.

Bursitis can result from a variety of work, household or sports activities. It causes intense pain which impairs the affected region.

Tendonitis and Bursitis Prevention

Flexibility is important in preventing tendonitis and bursitis. It is therefore recommended that you start any new sports activity gradually. When performing repetitive tasks at work, it is best to alternate between different workstations.

First Aid

In case of pain, rest the injured body part and apply ice for 10 to 15 minutes at a time, three times a day.

Treatments and intervention

The physiotherapist will conduct an evaluation to determine what structure is affected and how serious the problem is. In acute cases, the therapist will use ice and treatments such as ultrasound, interferential current, laser or the neodynator to reduce the inflammation. The physiotherapist will also suggest exercises and, if necessary, perform mobilizations to restore the body part’s strength and mobility.

Once the acute phase is over, you may need to consult an occupational therapist to set-up a work hardening program and work simulation tasks. The occupational therapist will also be able to tell you what changes you should make in your activities.

Sometimes a workstation needs to be adapted when a problem is due to workstation deficiencies, or when a problem is more serious.

Consult your physiotherapist or occupational therapist.

If not treated promptly, tendonitis and bursitis may cause weakness and stiffness and require more treatment. The risk of complications increases with any delay in obtaining appropriate care.
